It was a precious day off. Jessica had so few of these that she made sure to take advantage of each and every one of them. She had thought about picking up another job to help with the home expenses, but she wasn’t sure if she would actually have any time for a second job. There would be absolutely no time to do something for herself, even just to sleep. Honestly, she really didn’t sleep that often because of nightmares she constantly had almost every night, but even she needed to sleep every now and then.
“C’mon, Belle!” called Jessica from the front door of her apartment as she grabbed the dog’s leash from the hook by the door”Let’s go for a walk!” Exactly on cue, the blonde cocker spaniel came racing towards her owner, ears flipping and collar jingling. At risk of sounding a bit melodramatic, the little cocker spaniel, Belle, was almost the only thing in Jessica’s life that kept her somewhat sane. Despite what Jessica had become, the dog was as loving to her as if she were still human. Smiling slightly, she kneeled down to attach the leash to the dog’s collar, but did not escape from Belle’s kisses (as if she would want to). Smiling a bit wider this time, she lovingly scratched behind the dog’s ear before kissing her pet on the head and standing up.
The neighborhood that Jessica lived in was far from the best, so she took the proper precautions and made sure that she a least had some mace or pepper spray in the purse that was slung across her chest. It made her feel a bit more at ease to know that she had at least some protection on her. She was aware that Belle would probably do her best to protect Jessica against any harm that may befall her, but being a cocker spaniel, she wasn’t exactly menacing.
“Well, here we are, Belle,” said Jessica, looking down at the dog, who returned her gaze. They had arrived at the city park, in the garden area. It was just so lovely in this part of the park; flowers everywhere, stone statues decorating the otherwise somewhat plain area. With a light tug on the dog’s leash, Jessica lead the way down the concrete trail that wrapped its way in and out of the lovely gardens.

Sam needed to get out. He needed some fresh air. The younger hunter just felt so trapped, like everything was closing in around him. Lucifer would not leave him alone. He could not run nor hide from the devil. He was in his head. Only Sam could see him. Nothing could make him go away. But there had to be something. Right? Something out there that could help him? There just had to be. Today, Bobby and Dean were off working some case or whatever. Sam said that he would just stay behind. Do a little research. Besides, he knew Dean was very unsure about whether it was safe to take him or not. He was just worried. Sam knew that much.
But Sam did not want to stick around their motel room. He needed to get out. Luckily, Dean had left behind his Impala and left with Bobby in Bobby's car that he drove up here in. So quickly putting on his shoes, Sam grabbed the keys off of the end table and walked out the motel room door and headed straight for the Impala. He got in and pulled out of the parking lot, turning up the radio to keep his mind clear. He was trying to keep Lucifer out of his head. Luckily, it did not seem to bad today. But it came and went.
After driving around for what seemed like hours but was actually only an hour, Sam pulled onto the side of the road. Pulled in front of a garden. A garden. That sounded like a peaceful place. A place where he could actually be alone, to clear his head completely. Sighing, he got out and walked down the pavement and looked around. This garden actually looked rather beautiful. And thankfully, it also looked rather empty of people. That would be good. To be honest, Sam just did not really feel like being around a whole lot of people. Not today at least. He was just feeling so completely crazy. Lucifer made him feel that way.
Up ahead, he had noticed a young looking girl with the most beautiful blonde hair and a dog with her. He thought about maybe going up to her and starting up a conversation. Hoping that it would get his mind away from Lucifer. But then he decided against it, decided that it could be a bad idea. So he walked past her, but he could not help but look back behind him over his shoulder. And that was when he saw her face. And he quickly turned around, eyes wide. ”Jess...?” He instinctively took a step back, shaking his head. ”No, you-you can't. You're not real. You're dead. You have to be. I watched-I watched you burn.”

It was a lovely day in the park. The sun was shining and there was a light breeze that blew Jessica’s around about every now and then. She tucked some of her blonde curls behind her right ear as she paused in her walking to allow Belle to smell the flowers that had been planted alongside the concrete trail. “Oh, Belle, watch out!” she called in warning to her pet as several bees flew out of one of the flowers that Belle seemed to be infatuated with. Belle paid no attention to her and continued to sniff, so Jessica jerked slightly on the leash before the dog got stung.
The two continued walking and Jessica carefully avoided a tree to the left of the concrete trail that had at least one bird’s nest residing in it. She had learned the hard way in the past that all animals besides canines had a deep hatred for werewolves. That is, unless she was just incredibly unlucky and most animals just hated her…but she had a feeling it wasn’t quite that simple.
Since Jessica had been brought back to life, she tended to limit personal interaction with anybody. She didn’t want anyone in her life that she might end up harming. As if anyone would want to be around her anyway. Her self-esteem had been utterly shattered by everything that had happened to her between being brought back to life and the current time. This is why she was so surprised when she heard someone call her name; and not only her name, but her nickname. And what was more earth-shattering was that she recognized the voice. Oh, how could she forget that voice? She swallowed hard and turned to see if it really was who she thought it was.
Seeing Sam was a bit too much for Jessica’s delicate emotional state, so her eyes began to well up with tears and she quickly covered her mouth to stifle any cries that might come out. “S-sam? Sam, is-is that really you?” she asked, slowly lowering her hand from her mouth. Jessica was terrified that this was some hallucination or that someone was playing a terrible trick on her. She took a few steps towards the man, but paused, terrified that he really wasn’t real. The girl froze when he heard what Sam said next. Oh, that horrible night! He had been the last thing she had seen before she died.

No, this could not be real. It could not be happening. How could Jessica really be alive? It was just not possible. He remembered that night all to well. Back when he was twenty-two and attending Stanford. When he was getting ready for Law School. When Sam had truly believed that he had gotten out of the family business forever. But then Dean came and Sam went to go help him over the weekend. Why had he ignored those dreams? But how was Sam suppose to know that they were not just dreams? He couldn't have. But he left that weekend and when Sam returned Sunday night, his entire world crashed in around him. Everything changed. Forever.
It took him months, even years, to truly get over the death of his girlfriend. The girl he had been planning on asking to marry him. But had died, been murdered, before he had ever had the chance to do so. The love of his life. No, this definitely had to be an hallucination brought to him by Lucifer. He was trying to press his buttons, to make the youngest Winchester crack completely. And it was working, too. This just could not be happening. And suddenly he head himself saying ”No, no. You can't be real. He's doing this. He has to be.” Sam shook his head, taking a step backwards. He looked around at his surroundings. Trying to see where Lucifer was at. But the only one he saw was Jessica and her dog.
Sam could feel his heart racing. He could have handled anything else. Anything. But this? It brought back all of those memories from so very long ago. Memories that were painful ever since she was murdered. Feelings that he truly thought he was past. But there they were again. All of those memories and feelings washing over him like a tidal wave. It was beginning to get to be too much to bare for the hunter.
Swallowing hard, Sam finally looked back to Jess. This was so hard to deal with. He was already having a hard time hanging on to the safety bars. Having a hard time gripping onto reality. This was just something that was making him feel like he was completely losing his mind. ”How...? Why...? This can't... it just can't be...” Lucifer definitely had to be behind this. Though, he was very right. He had no idea that she was real. That Lucifer, the real one that is now trapped in the cage, had actually brought her back. To torture him. Well, he was definitely succeeding in that. That was for sure.

Jessica had never suspected that she would ever see Sam again. She was ecstatic to see him, but he seemed…almost unnerved by her. Well, that might be expected since she had died…and was brought back to life. That kind of thing really didn’t happen every day. She felt the urge to run into his arms and hug him, but with the way he was acting towards her, that probably was not the best of ideas. Jessica was at a loss as to just what had happened between now and when she had died or even how long it had been.
For all she knew, she had only been dead a few months. However, from the way Sam looked, she had an inkling that it had been a bit longer. Sam was certainly not the way that she had remembered him. He looked older, his hair was longer, he looked almost worn and extremely tired. It made her heart ache to see him like this.
“He? Wh-who are you talking about?” she asked, looking around. This was the most out of work personal interaction that Jessica’d had since she was brought back to life and bitten. Being a waitress, she, of course, was required to interact with the customers. She had to be as amiable as possible, especially in order to get a decent tip. When she was alive before, she had always somewhat taken waitresses for granted and had no idea just how hard they worked. Lesson learned for her.
“Sam, I-are you alright?” she asked, anxiously playing with her hair, which was something she always did when she was nervous or anxious. He looked just so…broken. She didn’t like it and was beginning to blame herself for it. If her presence was causing him this much agony, then she would leave him alone. She didn’t want to, but if that was what he wanted…
“I-I don’t know. The last thing I remember was…the fire. And your face,” she said, looking up at him,” I don’t know what happened.” She anxiously awaited his reply and felt tears begin to brim in her eyes once again, but she quickly blinked and did her best to get herself to calm down. “If you want me to leave, I will,” she said, casting her eyes down and briefly glancing back up at Sam’s face. Realizing that something was not quite right, Belle sat down at her owner’s feet.

Did Sam want her to leave? No he didn't. He was just... unsure. He felt like he was going crazy. Though maybe that was because he was crazy. Looking around, and after seeing that Lucifer was nowhere to be seen, Sam took a few steps towards Jess. ”You're real?” he asked her cautiously. ”But... who? How? He looked at her more carefully this time. She looked so different from what he could last remember. She looked... different. But he could not place the reason why she looked so different. Sam could not help but wonder why he looked so different. How long had she been back anyway? He had so many thoughts, questions, running through his head.
Biting down on his lip, he looked into the girls eyes and gently reached out to take her hand within his own. He needed to touch her. To know that she was real. He was afraid... afraid that she was just another one of Lucifer's stupid tricks. Making him hallucinate. ”Jess...” He let go of her hand suddenly and took a step back again. He could feel tears glisten in his eyes. Her death flashed into his mind. His fault. He could have stopped it. Azazel killed her. Because of Sam. Those dreams. They were real. They were going to come true. He could have stopped her death from happening. Why didn't he? She had been the best thing in his life. But things were different now. Things had changed. He was no longer the same Sam Winchester that she had once known. And hell, she did not even know everything about him. He hid plenty of things. And because of him hiding his real life, she died because of him.
”I'm so sorry, Jess. So very sorry. You dying, it's all my fault. I don't know how you could ever forgive me for that.” Sam looked away for a moment. How could she ever forgive him for leaving that weekend. For not being there. For causing her to die that way. He did not see how anyone could ever forgive something like that. He was different. He was so tired. Worn out. He was older, his hair was longer. Deep down, Sam just wanted everything to end. But he would not give up without a fight. He could not just give up. He had to keep on fighting. To beat this. He just had to.

It had made her uncomfortable that Sam hadn’t contradicted her offer to leave. If he wanted her to leave, she wished that he would just say so, so she could get back to her miserable life and leave him alone. Jessica hesitated in answering Sam’s questions. She wasn’t completely sure who or what had brought her back. A man had appeared to her right before she was bitten, claiming to be Lucifer…but she couldn’t tell Sam that. No, of course not, he would think she was crazy! No, the best idea would be to just play it dumb. “I’m…not sure,” she said, biting her lip and continuing to play with her hair,”But I’m definitely real. I promise.” At least, she was pretty sure she was real. This couldn’t be some sort of twisted nightmare that was terribly realistic.
“I-I don’t really remember once,” she said, moving her hands down to her clothes to nervously play with the edge of her shirt,”I just remember…that night and then waking up in a forest.” Jessica wasn’t necessarily lying, she was just keeping a few facts to herself. She didn’t want Sam to know that she had gotten bitten. She doubted that he would believe her first off, and secondly, she was terrified that he would get scared and leave her all alone. Jessica didn’t want to do anything that might remove him from her life again.
Jessica swallowed hard and froze as Sam reached out and grabbed her hand. A small smile spread across her lips as he felt his skin touch hers. This was the first physical contact she’d had with another human since she’d been brought back to life and bitten. It was a bit of a shock to her, but at the same time, it really felt natural. Like she was home. She didn’t want him to let go, but he did.
A mixture of confusion and concern spread across Jessica’s face as she took in what Sam said. “What? Sam, there’s nothing to apologize for; you had nothing to do with it. It was just an accident,” she said, lightly shaking her head. She knew that this wasn’t the whole truth. It wasn’t just an accident; she remembered the force that raised her up to the ceiling and cut her stomach open. She closed her eyes tight and shook her head as the memories came flooding back. She didn’t want to think about that right now.

'Sam, there's nothing to apologize for; you had nothing to do with it. It was just an accident.' Yeah, if only that was the truth. But Sam knew more than he let on. He knew what had really killed her. He knew the reason. And that reason was because of him. Which made it his fault. So, it was not something that he could actually believe. He wanted to believe that none of it was his fault. He wanted to believe that it was all just a terrible accident. But it wasn't. It was Azazel. The same demon that had killed his mother the same way. The thing that had destroyed their family, destroyed everything. It had taken everything away from him. Gave him demon blood, killed his mother and his girlfriend. Forced him into a situation where he would basically be forced to kill others. Others who were just like him. That seemed so long ago, like a lifetime ago.
Maybe it was time to tell her the truth. But if he did that, would he risk losing Jess all over again? Could he handle losing her again? That, he was not so sure of. He was not so she that he could handle that. It might completely push him over the edge. He was already standing on that edge, feeling like at any moment he would fall. Like his life would end. He felt like there was this death sentence just hanging over his head, day after day. Year after year.
Looking up, Sam looked into Jess' eyes and stepped even closer to her. Standing right in front of her. He tilted his head, slightly. ”It is, Jess. You don't know everything. And I'm sorry. I had a chance to stop it. I could have. I had dreams about that exact things weeks before it happened. But.. I'm sorry. I hope you can forgive me.” That last sentence was said in more of a whisper than anything. He also felt like there was something she was leaving out when she had said what she did. But he just could not place a finger on what exactly. And he did not want to press her on it either. But there was definitely more to her story. Then again, wasn't there more to his own story? Like being a hunter? Being down in Hell? Having no soul at one point? There was a lot that she had never known about him. And he always regretted never telling her after she was killed.

Jessica’s eyes widened a bit and she tilted her head to the side when she heard what Sam said. “You-you knew?” she said, her eyes darting from side to side and she contemplated what Sam had just told her,”Why did you say anything?” Jessica had thought that at the time, she and Sam had such a good relationship that they were able to tell each other everything. Maybe it had all just been in her mind. She couldn’t help but wonder if there was anything else that Sam hadn’t told her. Of course, at the same time, she knew that she was being quite hypocritical. After all, there were several things that she was keeping from Sam in that very moment.
She finally stopped playing with the edge of her shirt and folded her hands together, resting them in front of her. “Well, it doesn’t matter,” she said, brushing some blonde curls out of her face as the wind whipped them around,”It probably wasn’t something that could have been stopped anyway.” She vividly remembered the feeling of the mysterious force raising her up to the ceiling. There was no way that Sam could have stopped something like that from happening. If whatever that thing was that killed her really wanted her dead, she doubted that anything at all could have saved her from dying.
“Please, don’t-Sam, please don’t feel guilty about it. There was nothing you could have done,” she said, reaching out to touch his arm, but quickly withdrawing her hand. He had pulled away earlier when he held her hand, so maybe he just didn’t want to touch her. Not that she could really blame him. Compared to the way that she had been before, her confidence had been completely shattered. It was practically nonexistent now.
There were so many questions she wanted to ask him. How long had it been since she died? Were there other things that he hadn’t told her? Had he found his father? Why did he look so miserable and broken? …had he fallen in love with someone else?
“I don’t know what to say now. I really can’t believe I’m standing here, talking to you again,” she said, smiling slightly and looking down as she brushed her hair behind her ears. It felt so surreal to be around Sam again. If this was actually a dream, she definitely did not want to wake up. Ever.

How could Sam not feel guilty? The demon had only killed her to get to him. To push him over the edge. Get him back into hunting again. So didn't that make it his fault? He thought he was over all of these feelings. He really thought that he was. But standing here, in front of the woman he once was so in love with, had brought back all of these feelings again. He just could not get past what he really knew about that night. ”Jess... I know- I know who killed you. It's the same de- same thing that had killed my mother when I was a baby. But don't worry about that. Not anymore.” Again, he reached forward and took a hold of Jess' hand. He never wanted to let go. He was afraid that if he did, then she would disappear. ”He's gone now. Me and my brother- we killed him. He can never do this to another family ever again. It's over.”
Finally, after realizing that this was real, that she was not an hallucination like he had believed, he wrapped his arms around her and hugged her. It felt so unreal. Like a dream. He was not sure that things would ever be the same. But that was not what matter. The important thing was was that she was alive. And he would never let anything ever hurt her like that again.
And then he let go and looked into her eyes. ”We should probably talk. So much has happened these past six years. And- there was a lot I never told you. Things I never thought that I would have to. About my life. Something I had tried so hard to run away from. But- things happen. And you get pushed into getting right back into- the family business.” he spoke, brushing a lose strand of hair away from her eyes. She was so beautiful. But she also looked so different. She looked so sad and alone. It pained Sam to see her like that. She deserved the very best. And maybe, that had not been him after all. If he had just stayed away from her, then maybe she would be married with kids and happy now. Instead of hurting. Maybe seeing him again is what's hurting her so much. He didn't know. But he did not want her to be in pain. He never wanted that.

Jessica carefully listened to what Sam said with a concerned look on her face. The same thing that had killed his mother had killed her as well? Strange that there was such a strong connection. She wanted to ask questions. What exactly was it that had killed her? She could tell that Sam was about to give it away, but decided against it. Jessica didn’t catch onto what he was starting to say because he’d cut himself off too quickly.
However, as soon as Sam took a hold of Jessica’s hand once again, her worries about the murderer were vanquished. Sam was there with her and he was all she needed. Her smile gradually grew a bit until it was almost as big as her smile was before she died. This was certainly the happiest she’d been ever since she was brought back to life by…well, by whomever it was. Jessica suddenly felt afraid about Sam finding out her secret. Oh, what would he think of her? She couldn’t bear the thought of him being afraid, or even worse, disgusted by her.
To her surprise and even more so, her delight, the next thing Sam did was wrap his arms around her and pull her into a loving hug. She hadn’t felt comfort like this in so long; she felt accepted and loved. It was a feeling that she had truly missed. It was almost too much for her and she felt like her heart had exploded out of happiness. She couldn’t take it anymore and she burst into tears that were a mixture of happiness and relief. Jessica was home.
When Sam released her from his wonderful hug, Jessica quickly brushed away the tears, not wanting to alarm him. Her jaw dropped, though, when she heard of the amount of time that she had been dead. “Six-six years? Six years?” she said, her eyes widening. She couldn’t believe it; she had been stricken of six years of her life. And what was worse was she couldn’t remember anything. Why couldn’t she remember anything at all?
“Sam, what are you talking about? Well, I mean…you never had to tell me the things that you didn’t feel comfortable telling me,” she said, casting her gaze down, feeling insecure once again. She had to admit, though, that she truly was very curious about what the things were that Sam never told her.

Seeing a nearby bench, Sam decided to walk over to it and sit down. He looked around for a moment, making sure that Lucifer was nowhere near him. He did not want to deal with him. He couldn't. He looked back to Jessica and gave a weak smile. It was not the same smile that Jess had come to know all those many years ago. It was different. He was different. If only Jessica knew all the hell that he had been through since her death. He let out a sigh. ”Jess... god, it was never because I was uncomfortable telling you. It was because it was my father's life, my brother's life. It was a life that I never wanted. It was a life that I tried so hard to run away from. But after you were murdered, I left school. I never went back. I had to find the thing that killed you, that killed my mother. My father had been searching for it practically my entire life.”
Would she understand? Or would she think that he was crazy? Hell, right now, he really was crazy. He knew that. He did not know how to handle things anymore. He shook his head and looked down at his left hand. There was still a scar there from when Dean stitched up his cut. And it still looked pretty bad. He tried to focus on that pain to ignore the fact that Lucifer was around. Sometimes it worked too. Other times, not so much.
There was so much that Jess should know. About who he really was. What he really does. But he never told her. He knew that it would be a lot to take in. And she might just think that her was crazy. Hell, he was crazy now. But that was besides the point. With a sigh, he looked back up at the girl. ”I know you probably have a lot of questions. You can ask. Anything. I will answer you honestly. So, ask away.” He sat there and waited for her to sit or to not sit. He would understand if she did not want to sit down. He watched her reaction, waited for her to speak, to ask the questions that he was sure Jess would ask him of. About what the family business was. Or about his father? What happened in his life while she was away? Something like that.

Jessica could tell that Sam had changed big time from the Sam that she knew. His smile was different; that was something she recognized right off the bat. It just wasn’t the same; it seemed weaker and almost forced in comparison to the smile she was so used to. On the other hand, it was definitely still a familiar image and she was thankful she was able to see it again, even if it wasn’t the smile that she remembered. Besides, she was fully aware that she wasn’t the same, either. She knew that she wasn’t the confident, successful girl that she had been before she died.
She followed Sam over to the iron bench that was placed by the side of the trail and sat down next to him. Not too close, though, because she was afraid of over stepping her boundaries so soon after finding him again. Belle followed in Jessica’s footsteps and hopped up onto the bench on the opposite side of Jessica. She rested her chin on her owner’s legs and glanced up at the two people.
It saddened Jessica to hear that Sam hadn’t finished school. “You never went back?” she asked, tilting her head to the side. She’d had such high hopes for Sam and she just knew that he could be so successful as a lawyer. Jessica actually slowly began to blame herself for his never going back to school, since he went off to find the thing that had killed her. If she had been out of the picture, maybe he would have continued on to law school.
Jessica slowly began to stroke Belle’s ears as she pondered over Sam’s offer. She was so thankful that her dog was here with her. If she had been with Sam alone, she didn’t know if she would have the courage to stay or not. “Well,” she said, returning her gaze to the man next to her,”I am curious of what has happened to you. You do seem a little…different.” She winced at her own words because she knew what a hypocrite she was being. In all honesty, between the two of them, she was probably the one that had changed the most. “Not that it really matters to me. I just…you seem so unhappy,” she said, casting her eyes down.
As she did so, her attention was caught by Sam’s injured hand. “What happened to your hand?” she said, reaching out to grab it, but thought better of it.

Was he really that different though? Maybe it would not have mattered whether or not they knew one another back then. Maybe being a hunter was just the life that he was destined for. Maybe he was never meant to be normal. But him not going back to school? That was never Jessica's fault. That he was sure of. ”I didn't change. You just- you never knew this side of me. And if you did? I doubt you would have liked me so much.” he spoke softly, kind of sad. He knew that was true. Who wanted to be with a guy that had gone through all the crap he had? That hunted the supernatural? Sam had never really changed. He just was worn out and tired. Tired of everything. Of this life. Of hunting. He was tired of all the pain and suffering. He was just tired. So tired.
Nothing really changed. Nothing every would. This was what his life would be like until the day that he would finally die, and stay dead. Hell, he should have been dead right now. But then Dean had to go and sell his soul. To save his baby brother. And Sam resented him for that. He hated the fact that in one year since making the deal he would be dragged down to Hell, just because of Sam. It really did make him feel guilty. But that was such a long time ago.
'What happened to your hand?' That was what Sam had heard from Jess before he could say anything else. ”Oh...” Sam looked down at his hand. ”It's really not as bad as it looks. I fell. Cut it on some glass. It doesn't really hurt as bad anymore, really.” Sam looked back up at Jess. ”Jess... do you believe in the supernatural?” To some people, it might seem like an odd question. But it was also a very important question. After all, he dealt with the supernatural practically every single day of his life. Werewolves, ghosts, demons, vampires. All real. And he wanted to know if those were things that she had or would ever believe in. If they were things that she could accept. Yeah, some people might say that he were a hero if they knew about what he did. But Sam would never see himself that way. He was not a hero. He was a soldier. Had been tried like one pretty much his entire life.

Jessica fell silent, thinking about what Sam had just said. She couldn’t think of anything that Sam could say that would make her believe that she wouldn’t have liked him. Or even anything that he could say now that he might be afraid would change her mind about him. “Is it really that bad, Sam?” she asked with a tilt of her head.
She eyed the open space between the two of them and she wanted to close it. She wanted to be close to him, to hug him, and feel safe in his arms. But…she wasn’t quite sure how he felt about her anymore, despite the things he had done just in the past few minutes.
“I don’t think anything could have kept me from liking you,” she said, continuing to stroke the dog in her lap. She was internally bracing herself, though, for anything that Sam might reveal to her. And she braced herself further for any questions that he might ask her in return. The majority of his questions, Jessica probably would not be able to answer, unfortunately.
She knew that he was curious about just how she came back to life, but…she was as lost as he was. She had no idea how she came back and she wasn’t quite sure if she was thankful for it or not. Her memories of the last six years were nonexistent, so she didn’t know if she had been saved from something bad or pulled from something good. The only brief clue was the man that claimed to be Lucifer, but…that was ridiculous. That couldn’t be true…could it?
Jessica glanced back towards Sam’s face after he explained what had happened to his hand. She felt some slight disbelief that it was as small an injury as he wanted her to believe. It looked horrible! However, her attention was diverted from his injury when she heard his next question. Oh, God… Did he already know? Jessica swallowed hard and faced straight ahead before answering. “Honestly, if you had asked me that before…I would have said no. But…now I don’t think there’s any way I couldn’t believe in it all. Why-why do you ask?" she asked carefully as she turned to face Sam again.
